An alien is an unknown life form as Sammac said. An assistant as I said earlier is literally cannon fodder unless they have an RP background with security and research and it is known(Much like Marika with him as HoP everyone knows he has CMO qualifications and a qualification in every field of medbay. People who have known me a while would know this). Back into the main point an assistant is pretty much useless and won't be told until everyone else is told(medbay is usually kept in the dark until and casualty or injury is taken). Assistants are the lowest of the chain of command. Last time I checked a HoS/HoP/Captain won't tell everyone so they can panic and freak out. Most assistants will try and Rambo with a crowbar and get there ass kicked. The heads aren't telling you to protect you.
