While the factions in the lore are pretty nice. I didn't like any of them a ton. So I wrote one, purely unofficial at the moment though.
Named Ships:
The Colonial Confederation
History:
The Beginning:
The grand experiment of democracy on Earth had long since passed. Oppression, tyranny, corruption and abuse had become the norm, the individual and their freedoms were no-longer important, it was the greater good that mattered. What did it matter if a generation or two hated their lives? The unending cycle of the universe would carry on, not a care given to the plight of the working man, or anyone else for that matter.
This was not a popular policy for the government, but the powerless public could do little to change it. But the glorious age of interstellar travel had arrived and it would be the savior of the trampled masses, those who had been crushed under-foot by the greed of those in power.
It was not cheap, but fraternity between the lower-class was more powerful than the aristocracy has predicted. Millions of workers teetering at the edge of utter poverty and starvation gave up their last pennies, their last meal in-order to allow a handful of the brightest among them slip away from the surly bonds of the hell this once-paradise had become.
The colony ships bought by the masses headed beyond Earth's control, beyond even the farthest explored regions of the galaxy. The shadow Earth's government cast was long indeed, and once the colonists had escaped it, the most habitable worlds went with them. Those worlds left within the range of these primitive transports were far from the Eden they had expected. The fuel gauge neared empty as these behemoth transports slammed into the atmospheres of two dozen worlds, they no-longer had a choice. These worlds were theirs, it was too late to turn back.
Colonization:
The process of colonization is always a hard one. Exploration, mining, agriculture and a plethora of other problems face those risking their lives. But success is often rewarded handsomely, with vast mineral wealth, an uncountable horde of new plants, animals and other floral masterpieces.
Universally through-out the twenty four colonies, the beginning was hard, many died and many did not. But some colonies triumphed and civilized vast tracks of land across their worlds, discovering rich ore veins, strange animals and a incalculable amount of beautiful sights. Other colonies nearly failed, teetering on the edge of collapse, they all found a way to survive, nevertheless few of these less fortunate colonies ever prospered, being relegated to agricultural backwaters.
Civilization:
Fifty long years, it took the most prosperous of the colonies that long to crawl their way out of the dust they had wallowed in for what seemed like an eternity. In the Three systems, colonial ships met in space for the first time since the original colonization, some ended in unions, alliances and treaties. Other ended in a more memorable manner, a series of short but brutal brush-fire wars erupted. These small space and land battles embittered many of the colonies against each-other, setting off long-term rivalries that last even to this day.
These wars were otherwise inconsequential, with peace being rapidly resolved between the colonies. Talks of a Federal Republic, with each world as a province in the federal system erupted in earnest as the future began to look hopeful. The negotiations, after years of back and forth debate finally broke down, all but a handful of planets refusing to demilitarize and join in union with a federal government that would place it's own goals above those of the Planetary governments.
An alternate deal, one closer to a European-Union esque organization with a weaker confederate government was more appealing the the governments of the colonies. Each planet would maintain their own military, while they would all train their recruits in the same manner, their officers would all attend the same war academy and they would all use the same weaponry, vehicles and equipment. The overarching confederation's government would only take-control of the planetary militaries in a war that threatened the entirety of the colonies.
Slowly, over the next twenty years each planetary government conceded and signed the treaty of Confederation. And as such, the Colonial confederation was borne into this universe.

Misc facts
Colonial Military:
The Confederation itself has no active ground military, it's member states however all have their own military which are independently operated during times of peace, though in a coordinated manner for effective defense of Colonial space. During times of war, the combined militarys of all 27 constituent state forces are integrated and operate as a single force. The Confederate central government operates a moderately sized navy used for colonial defense.
The ground military of the Confederation's member states are highly variable in armament and equipment. Though all infantry are typically equipped with a power-armored hard suit which provides significantly expanded carrying capacity as well as basic life support and essential supplies in addition to armoring. These suits vary from lightly powered variants for vehicle operators and support troops such as mechanics and medical personnel, to well armored suit used in front-line infantry operations. Specialized variants also exist for scouts, pilots and a plethora of other support roles.
The Armored corps of the Confederation is for the most part composed of mechs, with tank-like vehicles being underused in most situations. The Confederation's policies typically value the mobility of the Mechs, their all-weather/all-terrain nature and firepower over the armoring available on tanks. There are a number of self-propelled guns and infantry fighting vehicles in use however.
The navy of the Confederation values long-range firepower and precision over brute force. As such their ships are often armed with massive missile tubes, filled with anti-matter and singularity warhead equipped missiles, often coupled with cloaking devices to make destroying them nigh-impossible. Due to the Confederation navy's complexity and technological sophistication, they operate fewer ships than another empire of equal size might. Despite this, the Confederate navy is a formidable force to be reckoned with.
Many consider the Confederation and it's constituent states rogue states, as they've not ratified and as such are not bound by various interstellar weapon accords banning a number of dangerous weaponry that is rarely used by other states, but frequently stocked in Confederate arsenals. Among the most common are the zero-point or “Singularity” warheads issued to main-line missile cruisers in the Confederate government's central navy. Several reports also indicate biological and chemical weaponry stocked on the ships registered under the “Planetary Landing ship” category, proving the lengths the Confederation is willing to go to in order to ensure it's territorial integrity.
Society:
Colonial society is a stark contrast with the Laissez faire policy in the core worlds. Colonial governments offer extensive social security, free health-care and a number of other socialist benefits that make the individual member world's people maintain a high degree of national identity and patriotism. The Colony states truly do care for their people as much as possible without being overly invasive. This is however, only possible due to a high amount of taxes that the government requires to maintain their popular social services and welfare policies.
While in no-way perfect Colonial society is significantly more utopian than it's mainstream opponents. This is achieved only through the hard-work and dedication of it's people, who've advanced a great deal in much shorter of a time and with significantly less resources than their rivals. For those that contribute, the Colonies are paradise.
