I've written up some ideas for new playable species. When one of these have been selected in a poll, I'll clean up, add to, and flesh out the description.
I kinda recommend holding heavy criticism until the poll is complete, and I finish up the winning outline.
Poll will close on 9/16/13 at 10:00pm!
Name: Heir'fen (air-fen)
Appearance:
-Covered in short and thin fur. Colored solidly, usually tan, brown, or grey.
-Very long "floppy" ears that can be moved in order to improve hearing and show emotion.
-Long claw-less "paws" with three fingers and a thumb. Can fit in gloves comfortably.
-Long claw-less feet with four toes. Can fit in shoes, with some serious discomfort.
-Leg structure that promotes speed, causes light discomfort in long pants.
-Stubby, short, and fluffed tail. Does not cause any discomfort in any clothing.
-Omnivorous tooth arrangement, resembling that of humans.
Psychology:
-Very impatient.
-Show disdain for weaker or slower crew.
-Place high value in water. Though this is less prevalent in Heir'fen raised off-world, crying and bathing are considered somewhat significant events.
Diet:
-Meat from large burrowing anthropods, small lizards, and mountain-dwelling marsupials.
-The leaves and thick, sprawling roots of patches of plants scattered throughout the desert.
-Various species of mushrooms that dwell within caves in the desert and plateaus.
Background:
The Heir'fen are a nomadic species that only recently made first contact with humanity and it's allied races. They hail from a remote, Earth-sized world, temporarily dubbed "Rimpoint-2" by NanoTransen officials, due to the natives' inability to communicate their own name for the planet in their own language. The surface of Rimpoint-2 is comprised of desert and rocky plateaus, with two very small artic regions at the north and south poles (entirely untouched by the native Heir'fen, whom have deemed the two areas uninhabitable). The world also sports a thicker atmosphere, comprised of a thinner variant of air mix, which traps heat from the system's large star (dubbed Rimpoint) and repels close to all harmful radiation from Rimpoint.
The Heir'fen themselves, when discovered, had reached a technological level very comparable to the 1940's on Earth. Most members of the species are divided into tribes, nomadically scouring the desert for food, oil, and water pockets in large conveys of combustion-engine trucks, operating on durable treads. Larger groups have allegedly reached a population size that allows their convoys to stretch over the horizon. In the rockier regions of Rimpoint-2, permanent settlements have been established inside of mountain-sides. These cities are the technological and industrial centers, with smokestacks rising from the sides of the mountains they dwell within. Aside from the varied political structures of the settlements and tribes, there is no planetary government.
Most Heir'fen immigrants in NanoTransen space hail from permanent settlements, or are born off-world.
Gameplay:
-Slight increase in speed. Result of leg structure and light bones.
-Very susceptible to structural damage. Result of light bones. Like, a couple of hits with a crowbar to the arm will break it.
-Increase in hearing range to be slightly larger than sight range. Result of large, sensitive ears.
-High hunger rate, like Tajara. Result of high energy demand brought by speed.
-Mildly susceptible to toxins damage. Result of thick atmosphere and lack of toxic plants or animals on their homeworld.
-Able to speak "Heirsage" with :r. Uses specialized vocal cords to produce high-pitched tones, which can only be heard and deciphered by a fellow Heir'fen or those whom make use of experimental audio implants.
Notes:
Yes, this is very similar to Tajarans, and just as "furfaggy". I'm aware, you don't have to tell me.
Name: Kik'leth (kick-leth)
Appearance:
-Hard, black exoskeleton.
-Large, bulbus compound eyes.
-Small, two-mandibled mouth.
-Three pointed fingers on each hand. Includes a thumb, an index finger, and a wide "mitten" finger.
-Leg structure can be altered and adjusted to switch between a bipedal, plantigrade structure and a quadripedal, digitigrade structure.
-Scent glands at the tips of a pair of antenna, used for communication via pheramones.
Psychology:
-Reluctance to trust non-Kik'leth individuals. Result of highly-social lifestyle on homeworld.
-Poor decision making skills when not in the proximity of signifigant numbers of Kik'leth.
-Animalistic aversion to intense light-sources. Explosions, fire, and concussive devices that make use of flashes are highly distressing.
Diet:
-Mushrooms that dwell in deep cavern networks below the planet's surface.
-Worms of varying size.
Background:
The Kik'leth are an insectoid hivemind race, native to a world slightly smaller than Earth, temporarily dubbed "Redwood". The planet is almost entirely covered in woodland and dense forest, and the surface has been almost entirely untouched by the Kik'leth (save for regions that have been stripped for solar array fields, starports, and slums.) The Kik'leth themselves dwell beneath the surface of Redwood, in vast natural cavern networks (an exception is made for exiled and disabled individuals, which live in slums on the surface.)
The species operates with a hivemind, in which all linked individuals form a single conciousness. The hivemind is extremely intelligent, and carries out actions with little regard for the wellfare of single members of the hivemind. The Kik'leth have established colonies throughout their solar system, inhabiting the crust of their neighbor planets in much the same fashion as their homeworld. Foreign negotiations with NanoTransen have been underway for about half a decade, with communication having to be conducted on the surface of Redwood
to allow the Kik'leth representative to link with the hivemind. The hivemind has recently agreed to allocate workers to NanoTransen in exchange for human communications, energy, and drilling technologies.
Gameplay:
-Increased resistance to structural damage.
-Increased resistance to burn damage.
-Sunglasses do not protect against flashes.
-Flashes and flashbangs will cause mild burn damage to the head/eyes.
-Using welders or being flashed without sunglasses brings an (increased) chance of causing blindness.
-Natural nightvision. (Not sure how to describe how this mechanic would be like.. All "light levels" are increased by one level?)
-Able to speak Kil'ak with :i. The language is made up by a series of clicks, and the release of particular pheramones. It can only be utilized and understood by Kik'leth, or those in posession of experimental translation devices equip with a scent processor.
-Can "shift gears" by adjusting their leg structure. When in a quadripedal configuration, the Kik'leth becomes significantly faster for about thirty seconds before their legs tire, and snap back to their bipedal configuration.
Notes:
The gameplay elements will be hard to code, I'm sure. The last ability isn't too important, but the whole light sensitivity thing is pretty critical for the species.
Name: Maajkaa (maj-kah)
Apperance:
-Bony, slender mammalian structure.
-Vertical mouth, containing teeth designed for grinding plant matter.
-Thin, black eyes.
-Four-fingered hands, including three fingers and a thumb.
-Trio of ear-holes on each side of the head.
Psychology:
-Extremely optimistic, as a species.
-Often somewhat oblivious of their surroundings.
-Very talkative.
-Somewhat pacificstic.
-Think highly of themselves, and will often attempt to preform tasks that they are not sufficiently trained in.
Diet:
-The thin, sprawling roots of jungle trees.
-Fruits and vegetables grown from bushes.
Background:
The Maajkaa are native to a planet they've requested to be dubbed "Eden". It resembles Earth in both size, atmospheric makeup, and plant life. Most of the surface of Eden is covered in humid jungle, with tundra forming near the poles. Most known fauna are varieties of lizards and apes, dwelling in the jungle. The tundra is lifeless, aside from a few species of rodents.
The Maajkaa dwell in walled, sprawling cities formed out of dull, generic low-rise stone and metal buildings. They do maintain a world government, in the form of a democracy in which citizens vote to elect city leaders for small issues, and vote to form decisions regarding more major problems. The Maajkaa are relatively culturally and scientifically insignifigant, presently undergoing technological stagnation from a massive lack of ambition.
Individual Maajkaa tend to think highly of their civilization, insisting that they are at a technological and artistic peak. They seem to think of themselves as being somewhat generous and benevolent to the "lesser races", much to the displeasure of the species they refer to. Present relations with NanoTransen are positive, with Maajkaa specialists being drafted for service aboard NanoTransen facilities, and human tourists frequenting Eden.
The Maajkaa representitives would insist that NanoTransen has been granted the gift of their powerful workforce, with little cost to themselves. However, wide-scale mining operations are presently underway on Eden.
Gameplay:
-Increased resistance to burn damage.
-Increased succeptability to structural damage.
-Able to enter "healing trance", similar to that of a Changling. This causes the individual to lose conciousness, and slowly heal their wounds. However, the subject in the trance will be both much more succeptible to all forms of damage, and become hungry at a much quicker rate.
-Can speak Maaj with :y. The language consists of a series of very low-pitched hums, undetectable by radio devices. It can be spoken by other species, with some training. It's also very, very irritating.
Notes:
Honestly, out of the three, this' my least favorite.. It'd be very good for douchebag RP, though! Imagine a Maajkaa Internal Affairs officer! IMAGINE IT!
I kinda recommend holding heavy criticism until the poll is complete, and I finish up the winning outline.
Poll will close on 9/16/13 at 10:00pm!
