Hospital Visit
The walls of the hospital room were a pure, sterile white. Racks of equipment were stacked against the wall. A recovery bed was pushed against the back wall, surrounded by IV drip feeds and various health monitoring systems. A young woman lay on the bed, covered up to her neck with a plain white sheet; however, it could do nothing to hide the bulky neck brace she was wearing. Her complexion was too pale to be considered healthy; it rivaled the almost pure white of the bedsheets that she lay under. The only color in her body was isolated in her hair, long strands of flaming auburn, and her eyes, a deep, brilliant green. However, they appeared now to be filled with unimaginable terror, their gaze fixed upon a solitary figure standing next to the bed.
The figure was that of a tall man, dressed in the gold and blue jumpsuit with a gold insignia, the attire of a NanoTrasen captain. He stared down at the bedridden young woman with intense, dark eyes. A slight smile played upon his lips, a sign of his amusement at the tragedy that had befallen the poor girl.
The look of terror still in her eyes, the girl somehow mustered the courage to speak, though her voice was no more than a raspy, trembling whisper. “Please…Just leave me alone…” The man's lips twisted into a cruel, mocking smile. “Oh, but why would I do that," he said quietly as he took hold of her wrist, "When you're just so much fun to play with?" He gently lifted her wrist up with a large, strong hand, and for a moment contemplated how fragile it looked before dropping it off the side of the bed, where it hung limply. “I don’t know how you were able to afford a Med-Evac, considering I cut off your insurance, but I don’t suppose it matters now, does it? You are never going to be able to work again, I will see to that…” The man carefully reached down, wrapping his hand around the young woman's neck brace. She whimpered in fear.
He applied a small amount of pressure on the brace, forcing her to look up at him. “It wouldn’t take much… just a small twist… and all the doctor’s work would be undone.” The girl let out a short gasp of pain, tears running down her face.
A cruel grin once again played itself upon his lips, and he applied more pressure to the brace. It was not enough to cause further damage, but his grip was strong enough to send a spike of pain through the poor girl's body. She clenched her teeth and sobbed, unable to raise her arms to defend herself. Suddenly, the man let out a sharp cry of pain and fell to the side, releasing his grip on on the young woman's neck. Behind him stood another man, older than the first, and clad in green and gold; the insignia on his uniform, however, showed him to be the same rank as the first man. He carried a telescopic baton in his right hand.
The first man jumped up with a roar and flung himself at the newcomer, who swiftly stepped to the side, striking his opponent on the back with the baton as he did so, knocking him down again. Finding himself on the ground once more, the first man rolled over to get back up, but was prevented from doing so as the older man kneeled down and placed the baton against his throat. The older captain stared at his downed opponent with pure hatred. After a moment, he spoke, venom dripping from his words. “Captain Miller, if I ever, see you near her again, if you do anything to her, hell, if you even look at her, I will kill you. Now, get out, and never come back.” The older man stood up.
Miller stood up, spat at the man and stormed out of the room, fuming. The woman whimpered in fear as the older man turned back around, but he simply collapsed the baton and sat down on the bed next to her. He glanced at her for a moment, and then gently brushed some of her hair away from her face. She flinched and tried to pull away, but the neck brace prevented her. The man reached down and gently grasped the arm that Miller knocked off the bed, and placed it next to her body.
The man stared at her for a while, a look of immense guilt in his eyes, then said very quietly, “You don’t know who I am… do you? Cara... she never told you?” The woman flinched again, and a period of silence passed before she was able to whisper, “No…” The man smiled sadly, watching her fingers twitch slightly. There was another period of silence as he sat by her side. Eventually, he broke the silence by gently posing a question to her. “What is your name? She... never told me…” The woman lay silent for a while, before whispering, “Amy Heris… but who are you? Why... why did you help me?” The man sat silent again, before reaching over and wiping some of the tears off of Amy’s face. “I am Varan,” he said simply. Amy looked at him for a moment, and said, “From when my arm was broken… you came and talked to me…” Her eyes widened with recognition. “You paid for my treatment!” she said, her voice growing a fraction louder. Varan nodded. “Both then, and now. Miller wasn’t joking when he said he had your insurance cancelled.” Amy's face twisted up in confusion, “But… why would you help me? I am... not worth anything…” Varan suddenly looked angry, causing Amy to flinch. “Who told you that? Cara, and Miller, I presume?” Amy nodded quickly, trying in vain to move away from Varan. “Yes… please… don’t hurt me…” Varan's anger suddenly evaporated, and he looked shocked at her pleas. He took hold of Amy’s hand and said quietly, “I am never, ever, going to hurt you... becasue you... you are my daughter.”
Amy stared at him for a long minute, and then whispered under her breath, “An SDF Captain…” Varan nodded, holding her hand tightly, “Aye, an SDF Captain.” Amy tried to pull her hand away, but she lacked the strength. “Why? Why did you leave us? Mother and I…” Varan gently let go of her hand, and gingerly set it back down on the bed at her side. “I didn’t know… not until I saw you in that ward with Inis… my niece… I was never told about you… I got in contact with Cara after that…” He gently took hold of her hand again. “Amy... when you are out of here, in a couple of months, I want you to come live with me in Cevalon... it is the least I can do after everything you have been through...” Amy hesitated a moment before responding. “Okay…” she whispered. Varan smiled and slowly stood up, moving over to the closet containing Amy’s personal effects. He rifled through the contents until he found her PDA. Picking it up, he walked back over to the bed.
Amy looked up at him as he showed her the PDA. He smiled and said, “I am going to upload a number into this, as well my home address. If you ever need anything, or if someone is going to hurt you, call this number.” Amy nodded her head slightly, and moved her hand toward Varan. He took hold of it gently. “Thank you…” she whispered, gently squeezing Varan’s hand. He nodded, and then he leaned over, planting a gentle kiss on her forehead, before quietly standing up and walking out.
Backstory
Amy Heris was born in 2432, on the 34th of May. She was born on the planet of Stormswrath, to a single mother, the result of a passing infatuation with a SDF Captain. The addition of a child to her finances drove Cara Heris close to poverty, but she kept Amy, first out of love, then out of a want for someone to bully.
Amy grew up in very poor conditions, working in her free time from the age of seven. She suffered constant abuse from her mother, who had degenerated into an alcoholic. Whenever Amy did anything wrong, did not anticipate a demand, or was just in the wrong place at the wrong time, she was both verbally and physically abused. She missed her own sixteenth birthday as Cara had fractured her skull over Amy not earning enough to pay for her now unemployed mother’s habits.
She was admitted to Cevalon General in the year 2450 with a broken wrist and left arm from another of Cara’s fits of rage. She was placed in a nearly empty ward, with only one other person, at the other end of the room. During her four weeks in hospital, Cara did not visit once. The other person in the ward received many visitors, including a retired SDF Captain.
The Captain, a Mr Varan Truesight, often came over to talk to Amy, displaying remarkable sorrow for her condition, and the way she cowered away from him.
When Amy was discharged, she discovered that an unknown benefactor had paid for her medical costs, which was lucky as Cara had already squandered Amy’s meagre savings on drink,
Only a few months after this, Amy received an unexpected job offer, from Nanotrasen, offering her 700 credits a month, nearly ten times what she had earned before, for her to be employed as a maintenance technician on one of their research stations. Amy accepted the job, and dutifully sends nearly all her wages back to her mother, to support her.
