You forgot about the part that the majority of the people on the station are research personnel with absolutely NO MILITARY TRAINING whatsoever. NONE. ZIP. ZILCH. NADA.

No, I didn't forget it at all. Military training isn't magic. It reinforces natural human instincts by giving recruits a strong feeling of group identity, and makes them capable of operating under extreme stress via drill and muscle memory.The fact the guy trying to attack a group of soldiers with a rock would most likely die is immaterial,anyways ; This is about roleplay and what real people do and how they act,not how likely they are to actually defeat the heavily armed commando team by themselves.

If a group of heavily armed men in ballistic armor breached your workplace, mowed down the security force, and then started taking hostages, I would be willing to bet money that you would not do a thing to stop it.

Maybe I would, maybe I wouldn't. That's the entire point: it happens ALL THE TIME, so much in fact that one of the primary skills of hostage negotiators is making sure no white knight tries something incredibly stupid, and escalates the situation.

And that's something big coming from a cheap bastard like me. The scenarios you mentioned, those are the outliers of humanity, the few people who won't freeze up when a gun is pointed in their face. That's about one in thousands, maybe even one in tens of thousands. It is INCREDIBLY rare for someone to risk their lives in such a situation.

No, it isn't rare at all. That's the point, it happens all the time, everywhere. Look up how many Poles got recognized for helping Jews in WW2.

Not to mention INCREDIBLY stupid. What if the person messes up in some way? Then the deaths of several people, including their own, will be on their hands. An untrained person who wants to be a hero can do a lot more harm than good in situations like that.

The fact it is stupid is completely irrelevant. The post I was responding to said real people wouldn't DO anything, not that they'd most likely fail. This patently, absurdly false.

You also forget to take into account that this is a heavy roleplay server. PTSD and survivor's guilt lead to incredibly deep and intersting roleplay, something that would not occur if the player went Rambo and took out all the hostage takers. They would only succeed in ruining the round for a lot of people, and maybe even land themselves a ban for powergaming.

I fail to see why only grimdark anguish is supposed to be good roleplay. That's a primary school understanding of drama: success against all odds can be just as dramatic as a noble failure.
