THE WAY THINGS ARE:
Hi again! My last RP thread kind of fizzled out, so, here we are once more! This time we're going to be doing your regular old forum RP, which I'll have enough time to GM in lieu of a full on pen and paper shindig. Since the other thread's poll indicated that most everyone wanted a sci-fi style game, we'll be doing a Firefly themed RP. Woot. This totally wasn't stolen from Sphere, by the by.
So, with that said:
Get ready to be a bunch of big damn heroes.
THEM RULES:
1) The big one: no powergaming. Please consult with other players using OOC brackets before you go and slash another crewmember's throat. I reserve the right to strike down grievously powergamey players with heart attacks or even declare posts as non-canon. This'll only be done with really bad powergaming, though; I'm not going to abuse my GM powers.
2) This thread is set in the Firefly 'verse. Please look over the lore (google is your friend) and ensure you've got a basic understanding of things before you fill out a character sheet. The gist of it is this: Firefly was a popular but short-lived space western set in a solar system that's post-colonization yet pre-civilization, in a way. There's a group of inner planets that are rife with advanced technology, but a large amount of the population lives on border planets on the the rim of the system. These rim worlds are forced to make do with a blend of modern and old tech.
3) The RP itself will be set in a spaceship, the name of which will be revealed once things start. We'll need a pilot, a mechanic or two, fighters, a doctor, and some special snowflakes, i.e. a preacher or prostitute. Once we get around five characters, we'll start, but more folks are welcome to join at any time!
CHARACTER SHEET:
THE SETTIN':
It's the year 2517. Earth-that-was is no more, and humanity has fled to a new solar system, filled with planets ripe for terraforming. The Alliance, a group of core planets bent on establishing a central government, has beaten out the Independents in a system-wide civil war. Now, most of the Independent army has assimilated back into the general populace, taking up jobs as private defense contractors, smugglers, and crime lords.
It's here, in this post-war 'verse, that our story is set. A ragtag group of rascals have come together under the leadership of a single-minded captain, and they're about to start it in the big leagues.
They're all intendin’ to misbehave, and there ain’t a force in the ‘verse that can stop them.

CHARACTER SHEET:
Name: (What're you called? On the ship, at least; whether or not you've got a heroic moniker on some backwater moon ain't our business.)
Age: (How old are you? Optimally, we're looking for somewhere between twenty and eighty, but it ain't set in stone. However, no kawaii seventeen-year-old schoolgirls or moody teenage demons.)
Role on the Ship: (You a pilot? Mechanic? Gunslinger? Doctor? Crazy psychic girl with a hastily put together plot rife with holes and contradictions?
Appearance: (What do you look like? Are you uglier than a reaver or are you purty enough to moonlight as a companion?)
Background: (What's your story? Where were you born? When and how did you get on the crew?)
Extra: (Stick anything more you want to add here.)

{CHARACTER SHEETS (Clicky)}Name: Dirk Taggart
Age: 31
Role on the Ship: Captain
Appearance: Average in height and build, but with the kind of posture that suggests a military man. Whether he served for or against the Alliance is his tale to tell. His face is square, with a solid jaw line and a nose that’s been rendered perpetually crooked due to multiple breakings. His brown mop of a hairstyle has been allowed to grow unchecked for several years, and he keeps it unceremoniously tucked behind his ears when it’s willing to comply. His eyes are a dark, speckled blue, less like the color of water and more like the lonely expanse of space. He is most often seen wearing simple colonist’s clothes with a faded grey armored overcoat, the kind that can be found most often on mercenaries and private security details.
Background: Dirk was born on the core planet of Persephone - a world home to both majestic cities and poverty-stricken ghettos. He was raised in the home of his wealthy parents, and lived a sheltered, well-educated life until he reached the age of twenty, at which point he struck out on his own to train in the business field.
It was during this time that he took his first trip to the slums, where he was confronted with the darker side of society, and he realized that he was not willing to stand by and watch as the poor were swept under the rug by their “betters”. Disgusted with his standard of living, he immediately booked deck passage on a rim-bound freighter and spent the next near decade of his life living in obscurity on the colony worlds, where he would eventually participate in the war between the Alliance and Independents. His allegiance during the conflict remains one of his most closely guarded secrets, and there are only a few people in the ‘verse that are aware of the truth behind his time in the war.
Now, a year after his self-imposed exile, he’s decided to take on a crew and start work in “legitimate business”. It’s been three months since he assembled his crew, and they’re about to take on the first official job they’ve had - complete with danger and a boatload of shiny loot.
Extra: This is the GM’s role, as I’m hoping you’ve gathered.
Name: Jonathan "Shakespeare" Jones
Age: 29
Role on the Ship: Pilot
Appearance: A gangly man with long, greasy black hair and emerald green eyes. He doesn't seem to be in the best of shape, his form rather thin and lacking muscle. However, his reflexes and spacial awareness are heightened due to his work as a pilot. He usually dresses in leather boots, black cargo pants and a grungy, grey tanktop. His teeth are very white.
Background: Born and raised on a backwater farming planet, Jonathan grew up yearning to see the rest of the 'Verse. Bored by his quiet life on his family's small farmstead, Jon caught a ride on a supply ship at the age of 16, flying away from his home and never looking back. He caught on to piloting quickly, and also developed a hearty habit for reading. Because of this, he has earned the moniker of "Shakespeare" from his crew mates. Always looking for work, he joined up with Captain Taggart after his last stint of work (on the fighter ship "Devil's Companion") ended badly.
Extra: He can handle himself in a firefight, but is utter shit in hand-to-hand combat.
Name: Hazellyn "Hazel" Moon
Age: 26
Role on the Ship: Doctor
Appearance: Soft, round features. Has short brown hair, often tied back. Wears a labcoat a size or two too big, the pockets often stuffed with some kind of tool or maybe a snack. Short and lean.
Background: Born to a middle-class family in a small farming community, Hazel learned to love the outdoors. Her father and mother had turned much of their house into the town clinic, where they tended to the occasional wounds and diseases that the townsfolk happened to get. With this she got plenty of training, and developed a good relationship with her parents. When the War started, though, they were shipped off to help the dying Browncoat soldiers on the front lines. She never saw her parents again, and because of this resents the Alliance rule. Realizing there was nothing left for her on her home planet, she left to drift around, eventually finding work on this very ship.
Extra: Totally DID steal my idea, Tuiee! YOU WILL PAY
Name: Valentina Knight
Age: 25
Role on the Ship: Mechanic
Appearance: Valentina is about 5'ft and 6'inches. Blue eyes and with dark black hair, she will more often then not have her hair pulled into a ponytail. On her right eye going across her face to her bottom lip is a faded but noticeable scar. Other than that she has no other noteworthy features. Like many women she looks nice when she wants to and other days looks like she has just rolled out of bed. When working she will often be seen relaxing with her jumpsuit rolled down around her waist and leaving just a tank-top to cover herself. A number of tattoos fill her arms and back as well. Many of these tattoos resemble that of tribal tattoos but on her back is a drawing of a hawk perched on the side of a mountain cliff. A few bracelets are wrapped around her wrist one of them having a dog tag hanging off that is often heard moving around on the chain.
Background: Valentina was born on Dayton, a moon of the planet Greenleaf. Much of her early life was regular for a child on the outer edges of the verse. Her life consisted of working at the local space port to help maintain boats that would come in and out of orbit to trade with merchants on Dayton. Around when she was 17 the conflict between the alliance and independents started to heat up but for the most part Dayton was left out, initially. Soon an alliance battle cruiser jumped into Dayton's orbit and alliance troops began to move down to the planet. For a few weeks all was fine, some of Valentina's friends talked about going and joining the independents but it was not till her brother, Seth Knight, went as well. In a few weeks Valentina was flying away from home joining a fight she wasn't sure she wanted to be in. Another few weeks and she was a soldier now. Positioned as a front line engineer for weapons and artillery Valentina saw a lot of fighting during the war, most of which she refuses to talk about.
After the war she moved back to Dayton and started to pick up jobs here and there for pilots and other kinds of repair jobs. Walking up to her garage one day she found her partner talking about a captain who was looking for a mechanic to repair his ship. Needing the extra credits she fixed up his engine. When he paid her the captain asked if she was looking for a more "permanent kind of work" Not needing to stay home anymore, she took him up on the offer.
Extra: Total awesome setting for a RP
Name: Matthias "Don" Langdon
Age: 28
Role on the Ship: Hired Gun
Appearance: Standing at well over six and a half feet tall, with the muscle mass to match, Don Langdon is the definition of fitness. He's completely bald, with a thick, black stubble covering most of his face. His brown eyes are cast in constant shadow from his thick, protruding brow. The thin line of his lips is set in a never ending frown - a perpetual reflection of his stormy personality. Thick burn scars run across most of his body.
Background: Don was born to a prostitute mother, who, desperate for money and barely making enough coin to support herself, dropped him off at a local abbey and never looked back. He was raised by the abbey's shepherds, who instilled values such as selflessness and valiance into him. However, all that he was taught was burned out of him when a local gang, seeking to make an example of the non-subservient shepherds, burned down the abbey and killed everyone except Don, who stole away in the confusion. Witnessing the merciless slaughter turned the then teenaged boy into a hardened man in a single night. He spent the next portion of his life perfecting his fighting skills in a series of increasingly complicated smuggling, protection, and assassination jobs.
Years later, he met Captain Taggart in a small city on Boros. Seeing the value of having an experienced fighter watching his back, Taggart offered him work and a cut of every job they undertook. The two had been travelling together for almost two years before Taggart decided to invest a large portion of his inheritance into a ship of their own. Don is fiercely loyal to Dirk, and is Taggart's first choice for a partner in a firefight.
Extra: For now, Don is a GM controlled character, but if anyone wants to use him they're more than welcome.
