Guide to Being a Warden
Before you continue reading this guide, you must know three vital things.
1. You are NOT an Officer, you do not arrest.
2. You are NOT the Head of Security, you do not order Officers outside of the Brig around.
3. You do NOT leave the Brig outside of emergency situations.
Now that you know these three things, we can continue.
Upon Arrival/Round Start
Congratulations, NanoTrasen has chosen you to Warden the NSS Aurora's Brig!
Upon arrival, you should do a few things before anything else.
Upon arrival, you should do a few things before anything else.
- Gear up, utilize your Warden specific gear, it is protective.
- If no Head of Security is present, ask Officers to report in for organization purposes.
- Clean up your Office, you will be working here for quite awhile.
- Grab the obsolete Armoury Inventory sheet and head into the Armoury, ensure nothing is missing or broken.
- Do a quick run through of the Brig, ensure nothing is out of place/messy.
- Make sure all lockers in the Officer Storage room are locked.
- If there is no Head of Security present, and a Captain is, ask the Captain for permission to act with the authority of the Head of Security. This will aid in Security Management.
- Write up blank arrest and search warrants, you are the Security paperwork guy.
- If you have checked everything off here, go to the camera console, and scan the station. (WASD and Direction Keys are a big help!)
Prisoner Processing
The majority of your job is Prisoner Processing and Management.
Here are the steps of processing a prisoner correctly.
The majority of your job is Prisoner Processing and Management.
Here are the steps of processing a prisoner correctly.
- Ensure the Prisoner was arrested on valid crimes, and wasn't brought in because of Shitcurity.
- Get the Prisoner medical attention if required.
- If the arrest was valid, take the prisoner from the Officer, and move them to the processing room. (Across from interrogation)
- Seat them there, go update and print out their record, take a picture of them, attach picture to the record, put it in the folder, label the folder (Insert Name Here's Criminal Record) . Put it in your filing cabinet.
- Move the prisoner to the respective cell, either Brig Cell, Permanent, or Insanity Ward.
- Any time 15 minutes and over, you must strip them of their clothing and give them prisoner clothing. And put any belongings in the cell locker. (HEADSETS STAY ON THE PERSON
- Any crimes 14 minutes and under, remove their satchel, empty their pockets, remove any belt and lock them in the cell locker.
- If the Prisoner was at anytime bucklecuffed to assist in processing, unbuckle and uncuff them. (Unless they are inherently violent)
- Set the timer according to their crime. (Check with Space Law always) Ensure the Prisoner is not abused by any Officers or other staff while imprisoned, and ensure all basic needs are met.
- Release the prisoner when their time is up and update their status to released/paroled.
Awesome, you've now officially processed a Prisoner. Good work. But that's not all! If their crimes included abuse of radio comms, you are permitted to revoke their headset access, but not their PDA. They may also have their headset removed if a legal injunction signed by the Head of Security has been filed.
Emergency Situations
Emergency Situations are anything from Space Carp migrations to hostile Syndicate takeovers. At this point, if there are active Officers, you may dispatch Armoury class weapons to them to deal with the threat, with permission from the Head of Security or Captain.
In the absence of any Command, the decision falls to you to make.
If there are no active Officers, and the Emergency Situation is critical and is presenting significant danger to NanoTrasen and her assets, you may leave the Brig to deal with the threat, but do not risk your own life to do so, unless you can confirm that your sacrifice will ensure multiple others survive.
The Armoury and You
Part of your job as Warden is making sure the Armoury remains secure and under-lock and key.
You should do regular checks of the Armory to ensure no third-party has found their way into the stations stash of weapons.
Nobody should be entering the Armoury but you and the Head of Security. And even then, entry to the Armoury is rarely needed, and you should accompany anyone going in there.
The Captain does have access the Armoury, and can technically walk in whenever he feels like it, this is heavily frowned upon as even the Captain should seek permission from the Head of Security or Warden to enter the Armoury.
Another thing to keep in mind is that, although the Head of Personnel has access to Security, he CAN NOT BOSS YOU AROUND. YOU are in charge of the Brig, and the only crew whose authority trumps yours in that area are the Head of Security and the Captain's.
Portable Flashers and Security Barriers
These things are snazzy aren't they, but guess what? Don't touch them outside of Code Blue/Red, these things are meant to be a Security precaution and shouldn't be used unless needed for Security reasons.
Your Authority
Lets get one thing straight, you are NOT the Head of Security!
You are equal with all Officer personnel.
The only time you are above other Security Officers, and the only place you actually have authority, is the Brig.
Security Officer being a pest and making a mess in the Brig? Kick him out for the time being.
Security Officer arresting someone invalidly and demanding they remain in their cell? Ask an Officer to detain the argumentative one and release the prisoner.
The Brig is yours. You are its caretaker, its manager, its nurturer.
However, as your supervisor, the Head of Security trumps you in authority.
And as the Chief Representative of NanoTrasen onboard the vessel, the Captain also trumps you.
You should never assume that the Officers will just listen to you in the absence of a Head of Security.
They are not required to listen to you, and you can not punish them for not listening to you.
Unless otherwise granted by the Captain, you have now power over Officers outside of the Brig.
Shift to Shift Work
The job of the Warden is not only prisoner management, but the management of the entire Brig.
Here are some things you will be expected to do while on duty.
The job of the Warden is not only prisoner management, but the management of the entire Brig.
Here are some things you will be expected to do while on duty.
- Ensure Prisoners are treated properly.
- Fill out search and arrest warrants in the absence of the Head of Security or Captain.
- Watch the camera network and act as a dispatcher for Officers.
- Set wanted crew to arrest and maintain Security Records.
- Monitor implanted crew. (Tracking & Chemical)
- Maintain the Armoury and hand out weapons in emergencies.
- File any paperwork Security may need.
- Pursue tribunals for crewmembers needing one.
On occasion, in the absence of a Head of Security, and with the majority agreement of the Security Team, you may act as a pseudo-leader . As you are usually more trained than the standard Officer.
If there is a Captain aboard, but no Head of Security, it is usually good to ask them for official permission to act with the authority of the Head of Security, if you can handle the extra responsibility.
Paperwork and Other Useful Things
As this guide mentions multiple times, you are the Chief Papework Jockey of Security. To aid you in your boring task that is paperwork, I have taken the liberty of supplying you with some sample forms, found below.

Guidelines
[*]Talk first, stun second.
[*]Always call for backup before attempting to confront a possibly dangerous criminal.
[*]Charge your weapons after every usage.
[*]Stay calm under all circumstances, anger and fear show weakness.
[*]Always lock Security lockers & logout of security terminals after each use.
[*]Seal off crime scenes and wait for forensics personnel to arrive.
[*]Avoid using force where possible.
[*]Inform the Warden when a criminal is wanted and set their wanted status via your security hud if possible. Beepsky is a force to be reckoned with.
[*]Respect the chain of command! The Warden outranks you within the brig itself. Obey the Head of Security, but remember that the Captain outranks him.
[*]Remember your priorities: One punch is hardly something to arrest anyone over if there is a hostage situation.

Those are just a few forms for the Warden, feel free to modify them to your needs, but make sure they are still within Space Law and Standard Procedure if you do!
Here's a check-list, which will help you decide when to leave the Brig or not!
Here's a check-list, which will help you decide when to leave the Brig or not!
- A-Is the Team lacking in manpower?
- B-Have the Officers requested backup?
- C-Is there backup available to respond?
- D-Do the Officers actually need backup?
- E-Is the threat a danger to crew lives?
- F-Is the threat a danger to your life?
- G-Have you received direct orders from the Captain or HoS to stay in your office?
Heres how this checklist works,
if A=Yes B=Yes D=Yes and C=No, then you should respond if you deem them in need of urgent assistance.
If A=No B=Yes and C=Yes, you don't need to respond.
If B=Yes C=No E=Yes D=Yes and F=No, you should respond.
If B=Yes C=No D=Yes E=Yes and F=Yes, you should only respond if you feel comfortable with risking your own life for fellow crew.
If G=Yes, then remain in your office. Leaving it is a crime unless Space Law is suspended under a critical emergency, i.e. singularity is loose and heading for you, and multiple people are being shot to death and there are no other Security to deal with it.
You are now ready to Warden properly, enjoy your time serving NanoTrasen and her affiliates!
