*cough* only humans can understand Sol Common. Refer to 'known languages' tab in game. Though since it is sign language, I guess the name could work.

The basic mechanic for the language is completed and will be implemented shortly.
The main mechanical note to keep is that it is not sight-based, it's still audio based. And as such, can be spoken over radios. I'm assuming our community is smart enough NOT to do that?

On that note I will be working on a way to stop people talking over the radio and allow it to be used in space once this is implemented.

If that's true, what are the Uneth, Skrell, and Tajaran crew speaking to the human crew? I always thought that all alien crew were supposed to have at least a basic understanding of Sol Common...

If you refer to the known languages button; - Sol Common : 1 - Tradeband : 2 - Gutter : 3 - Uneth : o - Tajaran : j (?) - Skrell : k (?)
Speaking without any of these : (insert key) is considered Ceti Basic, though confirm with Gollee. Sol Common can only be understood by humans. The other languages to their respective races. AI/Borg (maint drone) and I believe IPC's can understand all languages, however can not speak it. IPC's can choose to speak between gutter or tradeband as chosen in the character setup.

Holy shit, I never knew that humans had a human-only language. We -really- need language lore.
Oh. So if sign is game mechanically sound based, will there be a way for characters who've been temporarily deafened by an explosion/flashbang to not have sign be affected by the whole 'character talks but you can't hear them!' thing? :L Because if you've got a character who's supposed to have been already deaf... It's kind of silly. It's also not a situation that crops up much, so not -super- important. But I'm happy that *SL is being implemented.

Lessick, as noted, Sound Scopes will have a look at switching it over to be vision based, or at least in some form.
The issue is that all of the language datums already present are soundbased. And to make a fully emote based language may require a bit of reinvention of the wheel. Which will take a bit.

This is certainly not a pressing issue for our devs, imo. While it might be interesting to have sign language in the few situations where it would behave differently from other languages, having it at all is already something I'm very happy with.
I would also hope that our players are smart enough not to attempt to use it over the radio, yes.

Considering most of our Tajara players use Sikh'Tajr over the radio...
I'm /hoping/ they learn that it is a sign language, and that it shouldn't be spoken over the radio.
That being said, I can see the same issue happening here. I however support the implementation.

I'm assuming that Sikh'mas is used in-game, and not Sikh'Tajr.

EDIT: I suck dick.
I'm fairly sure Sikh'Tajr is the spoken language in-game, though.

That it is, annoyingly. I suggest we add Sikh'mas, or switch them.
And I've stopped doing that, but they still get picked up by Radios and shit.

And again, as was said before, most people who are going to use sign language (me included for May :3) are fully capable of roleplay and SHOULD know not to use it over the radio until the swap over to emote based action. Going to be fun for when someone forgets to turn off a station bound radio though X3

We have cases where the Sini language, added into the code and made publically accessible by mistake, is used by common players. Anyways.

Language converted to a visual language. Visual Languages will be able to be used in a vacuum. They will be unable to be used on radio.
Unconfirmed: Unable to know if pAI's can see them talk (No reason why they shouldn't) Will the AI even be able to talk to them without a pda.
