Amy sighed and looked at the pile of electronics on her desk; she needed another capacitor. Standing up, she walked over to a large set of drawers set against the back wall, pulling open a few of them and peering inside. She ran her hand through the detritus of each of them, searching for the missing component.
After a few moments of fruitless searching, she brushed some of her hair back from her face and turned towards the door, she would have to ask Varan to order some more; a pang of worry shot through her, would he be angry she had ran out…? No… I don’t think so… Amy hesitated for a moment, the headed out of the door, turning left towards the stairs.
At the bottom of the stairs, Amy turned left again, down a short corridor, she paused at an open doorway, she could hear muffled cursing from within. Amy apprehensively peered around the doorframe.
Varan was sat down inside the room, with his back to her, and his tablet held in front of him, lines of text were running across it, Amy leaned in slightly and read off of the tablet.
Mr Truesight,
As you requested, all information and camera footage of the subject has been collected for your convenience, of particular interest is the attached footage of Mr Janosch Goellstein in situ with another crewmember, I believe to be called Simone Chambers.
I will expect my payment within the next forty eight hours, Mr Truesight.
Amy’s fingers were white as she clenched her hands on the doorframe, she dimly felt tears running down her face, and her chest hurt, like she couldn’t breathe properly. She quietly crept away from the door and headed back up the stairs.
When she reached her room, Amy sat down on her bed for a few minutes, staring at her hands as tears dripped down her front. She lifted up her left hand and inspected the ring on it. It was a rather ornate gold ring, with a large diamond inset into the top. Very carefully, Amy wriggled the ring off of her finger. Standing up, she walked over to the desk, placing the ring into a small velvet box.
Once that was done, Amy sat down again, small sobs and gasps escaping her throat; she sat like that for ten minutes or so, before moving back to the desk, she sat down heavily and pulled up a piece of paper. She wiped her eyes, and scribbled something down.
Janosch, I am sorry, I wasn’t good enough, I don’t want to get in your way, I am not worth that.
Amy let out another sob as she tucked the paper under the box. Standing up again, she walked back over to the drawers, opening one of the lower ones carefully. She pulled out a long length of thick, grey power cable.
Varan placed his tablet to the side, pressing his hands to his face, “God…” A Tajara on the other side of the room looked up from his book, “Is something wrrrong?” Sel’tier asked, raising an eyebrow quizzically. Varan opened his mouth to respond but was interrupted by a loud chime, “The camera in Miss Heris’ work area has been disabled.” A synthetic voice intoned, before falling silent. Varan frowned and looked at Sel’tier, before standing up. “What in the…” A loud clatter from overhead cut him off, and he looked up sharply, “That is Amy’s room.” Sel’tier jumped to his feet as well, and the two of them sprinted out of the room, taking the stairs three at a time as they sped up them.
Varan tried the handle on Amy’s door, it was locked; he rapped on the wood, “Amy? Are you alright? Unlock the door.” There was no response, Sel’tier stepped up next to Varan, “Amy…? Arrre you alrrright?” Again, there was no response.
Varan called out into the corridor, “Strike, unlock the door.” There was another loud chime, “Unable, the lock is jammed.” Varan felt an icy hand grip at his stomach, he shouted through the door, “Amy! Can you hear us?” He waited for a response; there was none.
Varan growled and pressed the point of his shoulder into the door, “Amy! I am coming in, get away from the door.”
When she didn’t respond, Varan took a step back, and rammed the door with his shoulder, a harsh wooden crack echoed through the corridor as the door was ripped from it’s upper hinge, but it stayed standing. Varan stepped back again, and charged forward, taking the door off of it’s hinges.
Inside the room, the source of the loud clatter was obvious, Amy’s desk chair was kicked up against the wall, lying on it’s side. However, this was utterly unnoticed by the two men.
Attached to the ceiling light, was a long grey power cable, looped through the chair that attached the light to the ceiling, the cable was stretched taut, and lower down...
Varan yelled in horror, “Amy!” She was hanging from the cable, looped around her neck, her hands were twitching slightly, and her lips were beginning to turn blue. Varan grabbed hold of her waist and tried to lift her up and out of the noose, he turned his head and shouted at Sel’tier, “Cut her the fuck down!” Sel’tier complied, snatching a pair of wire cutters from the desk and jumping nimbly up onto the bed. He slashed the cable, and Amy collapsed bonelessly into Varan’s arms.
Varan ran out of the room, cradling Amy in his arms while Sel’tier trailed after him; there was a thick red line around her throat where the cable has sat, her eyes were closed, and her face was very pale, in contrast with her bright red hair.
The two men ran through the house, doors opening as they approached them. The sprinted out into the sunlight, and started down the drive, a car was already rolling out of the garage at the wireless insistence of the AI. Sel’tier clambered into the driver’s seat, while Varan laid Amy down across his lap in the back. Her head rested on his lap. Sel’tier revved the engine, and the car screeched down the drive and out onto the street, causing a cacophony of horns and angry exclamations as they raced down the road, weaving in and out of traffic.
Varan dug his fingers against the side of Amy’s neck, desperately searching for a pulse. After a few moments, a weak and erratic beating throbbed through his fingertips, and tears dripped down onto Amy’s face. “She is alive… Oh my God… Oh my God…” Varan murmured to himself, cradling Amy’s head in his hands; her eyelids flickered.
Amy looked weakly up at Varan as he held her head, “D-Daddy…?” She said, almost inaudibly, Varan let out a half-sob and rested his forehead on hers, “I am here… I am here, sweetheart… You are going to be okay… It is all going to be fine…” Amy smiled weakly, and coughed slightly, flecks of blood from her throat speckling her lips.
Sel’tier brought the car to a sudden stop in front of a large white building, scattering a dozen pedestrians as he bumped the car up onto the pavement in front of the building. Immediately, Varan kicked his door open, scooping Amy up again, running towards the sliding doors of the hospital. Several security operatives accosted him immediately, before recognition caused them to back off hastily, Varan rested Amy on one arm while snatching an empty gurney away from a nurse, setting Amy down carefully on it.
“Hey! That the hospital-“ The nurse began, before she realised what was happening, abruptly, she took command of the gurney from Varan, elbowing him out of the way as she wheeled the gurney quickly towards the Accident and Emergency centre.
Varan followed at a distance as the nurse manoeuvred through the centre towards one of the doctors. Varan caught up as the doctor asked, “What happened? Get her into an oxygen tent, and get some biofilm on that throat.” Varan slowed to a halt, resting his palms on his knees, panting for a few moments, before saying, “I don’t know what happened, I found her in her room… I think she was hanging herself.” The doctor looked over her shoulder at the retreating gurney. “We have her now, we will take care of her, who is she?” Varan held up a finger, asking for a moment’s grace while he caught his breath, “Amy Heris, my daughter, I am Varan Truesight,” He patted his pockets, and held up an ID card, “When she is stable, put her in my private ward. She will be better off there.”
