I've had it. I've fucking had it. So many new players to security that don't know how to properly officer. While it irritates me, I do find it to be good that so many new faces are joining our diverse security force. BUT THEY WON'T LEARN.
Notice: This is not a guide on how to be good at security. It's a guide on how to not suck. If you already don't suck, most of this won't concern you.
Starting up:
Anyways...
Your job:
As an officer, you must patrol the station, looking for criminal activity. This includes just about anywhere you can get to with your security ID. Once you're done walking...walk again. And again. And again. Yep, this is your job. You wanted to fight Xenos and all that jazz? Nope. You just walk.
Suppose you see someone who is breaking the law. First, you tell them to stop, depending on what it is. If it's something like vandalism, you must tell them to stop. If it's something like assault or murder, you must stop them. Tell them their charges and tell them they are under arrest. If they comply, just put cuffs on them.
If not, then that's what the tools you have in your belt are for. But remember. There's an order to them.
Always try to flash first. It works on almost anyone who isn't wearing a helmet, sunglasses, securityHUD, goggles, or etc.
Then there's the baton. Use this when a flash won't work. Don't use it when a flash can work, that's unnecessary and brutal and nobody likes an officer that does that. Nobody.
If they are at a range, you can try to use your taser gun on them. Be warned. Try not to shoot civilians. You only have 5 shots before you need to recharge and I assume the 2-shot downing is still a thing here. So be careful, useful in a chase.
Also, pepperspray. Not sure if knocks down people with protection higher than a flash, but it can knock people down from a distance. It can be dodged, though. And it is considered painful and cruel if you use it when something else can do. Usually, you won't find yourself using it. (GREAT FOR INTERROGATIONS!)
So now you take them to the brig:
If there's a warden active, always let them do the timers. If not, consult space law on how long they need to be put in.
Request demotions if a head of staff is available if what they did relates to their job.
Do not be unnecessarily brutal to your prisoners. You are the officer. Not the judge, not the jury, and certainly not the executioner. Leave decisions like capital punishment for a head's decision.
Command:
So it's pretty obvious that you listen to the HoS and the Captain. Follow their every order, so long as it does not break Space Law/SoP. Trust in these people. They are here to guide you.
Know the chain of command. If a CE or a CMO claims to be the acting captain, and their claim is valid, treat their orders as you would a captain's.
There's a lot of debate and confusion about the Warden. They are supposed to be looking after the brig and they are supposed to take charge when the HoS cannot. Due to this, officers (Usually the warden will try to tell them) will think of them as their boss. This is not necessarily true. A warden typically has no extra power unless appointed by an HoS or other figure of power. However, they do have the final say in briggings and they are supposed to be leaders when the situation calls for one and none are available. Take note of that.
Also, detectives. You are not a part of security. Do not arrest people. You can point out who's doing a crime, but you're not of authority to arrest people. I see it happen too many times to not bring it up.
Mistakes and Tips:
Do not go to a dangerous area without backup.
Keep suit sensors to the maximum.
Know the limits of each of your tools. Flashbangs should be used when you're under attack in a firefight.
Do not bully or act like an authority to the crew because you are security. Unless it's a dire emergency, you shouldn't be acting the big cheese.
Always have an extra set of cuffs. I know, I repeated it. But that's how important it is.
Beepsky is a great tool. If someone's running around and you can't quite get to them, set their records to arrest. You can right click them and examine them to do this if you have a SecurityHUD. Also, the records on the computers have this option. Beepsky will arrest anyone he sees who has an arrest notice. But be warned! He's fragile, manipulable, and stupid! (MUCH LIKE MOST OF YOU)
Notice: This is not a guide on how to be good at security. It's a guide on how to not suck. If you already don't suck, most of this won't concern you.
Starting up:
- First thing you must do is get to a security locker. Inside you will find many diverse tools to help you stop crime.
- First thing's first, put on a security belt.
- Next, take the following items and fill the belt with them: Stun baton (Make sure it is turned on at all times. It only drains power when used.) Taser, Police tape, flashbang, pepperspray. Anything else is not necessary, but could be helpful.
- Take the armor and put it on. Do not put on your helmet until code blue or higher. Keep it in your backpack.
- Take a HUD and put it on. This is important.
- Now, close and lock the locker. So many people forget that...Walk over to the SecTech machine. Dispense an evidence bag box and put it in your backpack. Also, get an extra set of cuffs and put them in your belt.
- You should have a pair of cuffs in your backpack at start. Put those in your pocket next to your flash.
