I found them pretty useless, and not used at all as of now. In their current state they don't get much attention. Now, if we would implement a 30 sec beep sound when there is an unread message, this would annoy the people enough, that they would actually pay attention to them, and use them. I think asking for a right robot arm in public comms is just ruining the atmosphere.

Part of the problem with the robotics console is that it's currently invisible from the rest of the room except in the square right next to it due to strange mechanics of tinted glass (unless that's been fixed just this week, which I doubt)
I use the request consoles plenty for interacting with cargo, so I don't really know what the big problem is? Having them beep until looked at might get annoying if nobody is attending that particular room -say, in chemistry, which is visible from medbay. However, I'd be all for flashier sprites; maybe instead of alternating between green and lighter green, the console could go between green and blue or green and yellow when there's unread messages? Also, PDAs are another good non-radio alternative to asking departments for junk, if nobody's paying attention to the console.

This. But I also like the constant beeping, too. If you're the QM and you weren't in the room when robotics asked for (or demanded) their crates, and it's a late night round where you'd probably be too sleepy to notice (which I do a LOT), this would be a good idea.

Maybe there could be a toggle for reminder beeps? And cargo could start out with it on, while the other departments might not?
