Wisps

Wisps are ghost-like mobs that function in ways similar to a pAI. Their appearance is that of a small blueish ball of energy, surrounded by a heatless flame. They have the general movement capabilities as a shade, and their say cannot be understood by anyone except ghosts (to anyone else, it appears as "The wisp vibrates." Wisps have the option to form a link between another willing player nearby, bonding with them. Players can only form a bond with 1 wisp, and vice-versa. Wisp and bonded player can communicate with each other by whispering, and this communication can happen even if they are nowhere near each other. Wisps have the ability to condense into a tangible sphere, which allows them to be picked up and carried around. They enter this state whenever the player controlling them goes AFK.
There are also special wisps with extra powers and abilities, but in order to use almost any of these powers, they have to drain the health of other living things, which gradually changes their aura to a more sinister color (red or black) the more life they drain. One of these abilities is to transform into a ritual knife that only the player they're bonded with can use.

Sounds good, it would add a bit more "Magic" to the game, since it exists, the Space Wizards have it, so why should there be no other trace of it? I am not sure on the bit about the Wisp becoming an orb when the bonded player goes SSD, as that would just end the Wisp's game.

Hmm, I like this like I said on Apollo, BUT I think if it's going in, it should be activated by a special item just like golems, podmen and PAI, as tons of whisps running round might mess with the whole sci-fi atmosphere, so maybe have wips be spawned from an artifact.

How about an artifact with a small number of charges (I'm thinking maybe 3-5), and players can use a charge to summon a wisp, or all the charges for an augmented wisp (they can't use this if they've already used a charge), after which it crumbles to dust.

Counter point, wisps can go intangible to go through walls, and can use the smoke spell. No offensive capabilities whatsoever, to ensure a lack of round starting wisps turning into knives for easy shanking.

Not all wisps can turn into a knife, only the special augmented ones, and the only person who can actually use it for combat is the person the wisp has bonded to.

There's already hundreds of things to be used as a weapon on board, and I'm quite sure that having a player turn into a knife will not play out very nicely.

The augmented wisps are supposed to be a sort of antagonist, brought about only during wizard/cult rounds, or as part of a special event.

I was just thinking how useful a wisp would be for a HoS or Captain, makes scouting easier. Questions: Can they be hurt/killed? Can they pick up Items, and if so, can they still move through walls?

Wisps can be killed, but mostly only by environmental hazards (fire and explosions are the main two). They can, however, be incapacitated, causing them to transform into their orb form and be unable to transform for anything else until after sometime. This can be done by stunning effects, energy-based weapons (even non-combat ones like the plant mutation gun), and the chaplain's null rod. It should also be noted that wisps are valid targets for cultist sacrifice runes.
Wisps can neither pick up items, nor go through walls.

After playing Beyond: Two Souls, maybe these wisps could be attached to people for some reason or another. Maybe relatives/good friends that have died.
