NOTICE: do not post in this thread unless your post contains constructive effort. The objective of this thread is NOT to cause a shitstorm. The objective of this thread is to unfuck the situation, or start the process of doing so! Gentlemen. We have issues present in this community at the very highest of levels. This needs to be sorted, and it needs to be sorted before any attempt at expanding, marketing, etc. can be made. Consider this a more drastic approach to me trying to attempt movement on the staff forums, but it is one that I feel is necessary to take. First, allow me to explain the reasoning behind this thread: - To involve the community in the flow of information.
- To involve the community in the repairs necessary to fix this situation.
- To showcase these issues in a constructive setting, agree upon goals to fix them, and fix them.
Secondly, allow me to present the problems for discussion: - Complaisance and stagnation. There is no forward movement being taken at this time. This is the biggest issue present at this time, and it greatly falls upon the shoulders of staff present (myself included). This is the primary issue that needs to be sorted. Without movement, without ideas being utilized we will fail as a community.
- Attitude and accountability. The highest of ranking should bear the most constructive of attitudes. They should be the ones who present things, who stop arguments that derail threads, who take the initiative and move forward towards fixing an issue, instead of simply complaining/commenting about it. They should also be the ones who work together and not against one another. Internal fighting and animosity leads to a collapse. I have seen commanders and leaders who completely hate eachother work wonderfully in a situation, they simply know how they feel about eachother, and put it aside while striving towards a set goal. I have also seen leaders who completely hate eachother get entire communities lost, because they were unable to do it.
Thirdly, allow me to present the actions that, in my opinion, would require taking: - More activity, more constructive actions. This community needs to stop simply discussing and complaining, it needs to be able to take initiative and select a course of action. It needs to be able to decide on a course of action, through compromise or a complete agreement, and execute this course of action.
- More communication. Complaining is not communication. Animosity needs to be located and squared away on a personal level, to allow for the community to function. The community needs to be aware of major aspects that will affect them, it needs to be included, do an extent, in them.
EDIT:A concert and to-the-point summary of what needs to happen: So to summarize: -More players (Marketing) -Active staff to host events (Event team) -Active staff to monitor forums (Focus the threads from derailment) Because this is something that concerns the community as a whole, I invite everyone to assist in this matter. Just please, do not squander this, and do not turn this into a shitstorm. It is something that concerns all of us, affects all of us, and needs to be fixed by all of us.
Allow me to speak on a personal level, now. I have seen too many communities wither and die because people were acting like fools. I have lost contact with so many good friends, with whom I spent months ingame, purely because they could not talk things out, sort things out, and move forward. I have seen so much fucking work wasted in those communities because no one took the initiative. I am fucking sick and tired of seeing it. This is starting to happen in this community, and I do not want to loose this community. The issues above NEED to be sorted out. Admins and staff NEED to start taking a more active role on the forums. I've had a proposition thread sitting on the admin forums for a week now. No constructive input, no support, nothing. It's fucking shameful. I've seen admins constantly complain about shit not being fixed, about how bad the fucking situation is, and yet they have yet to offer constructive input. Or when it is offered, it gets drowned out in noise, something which the community is accountable for. This needs to end, and it needs to end right now, otherwise we will loose this community.

What I am reading, it seems that the staff/people with power, are floating and doing minimum to progress. What I also would like to know is, what do you consider progress of benefits? What would be your ultimate goal? -Activity? -Events? -Better code/Unique code? -Stability? If you just don't want the server to crash and burn, I can understand. There are a lot of helpful tips for that (Influx of new people, Keep the old ones, Mudslinging, Bonding).

Code will be a sore point, as we lack coders. I think we should focus on activity and events, as those assist towards keeping an active playerbase. I already suggested that we start running regularly scheduled events, but said suggestion has received NO input (hence the major issue).

So to summarize: -More players (Marketing) -Active staff to host events (Event team) -Active staff to monitor forums (Focus the threads from derailment) Correct?

Well events mean nothing until we got some bleeding players. So i'd say we need to get more advertisement out (see the banner idea). Our target audience would obviously just be space station players, so the banner would be the best start.
As well, we need to tighten up on the head whitelists, I'd say, because we have far too many heads as is.
Oh, and Make sure all the possible round types are balanced properly.

Well if we get more players we need the extra heads...so that can be left alone IMO. Events can be small. It helps spread the word. Hell you can run an event with a staff of 5. It just requires an admin to create and monitor.

Events can be minor. Heck, honestly, we can even consider a proper ran nuke or vox an event <.< Other minor events would be things like cabinfever, the alium thing Omni ran last night. All require a small crew.
And as Damon said, having events will help with advertisement. If we can run these on a regular basis, and put out dates for people to attend, it'll create consistency which will attract people.

(Discussing most of this off-site) But I guess the general thing at the moment is... Do you want more of a purge of inactive staff so current crew can focus? OR Do you want more active people to take a lead to get the jobs done? OR Whatever ideas or combinations of mention.

Tf2 gifs. Lots of them. Seriously, though. A FB page might work if we can keep it being used to post shit. Such as game logs, pics, quotes, whatever. Another idea might some kind of contests where you enter and the winner gets some kind of in game item of no notable value besides look, like a tie or a fancy pair of gloves or some shit.

If there is serious talk of an event team, I'd be more than willing to help out with any events. And maybe I can see about doing something about the BYOND banner.

For our type of game I honestly do not think a facebook page is not that suitable. Events team could be pretty cool though as long as it means that we get more decent events going.

Of a personal opinion, I do not think a Facebook page would be all that good. I wouldn't join it, as I'd rather not let my Facebook 'friends' see what I get up to. I think an event team would be good if it was properly created and coordinated.
A better banner is do-able. We can do that.

And now that I actually think about it, yeah, really don't want the shit we do being public to anyone I know.

Well the Social networking just helps pull people in, no one is forced to join it. It would have things like what we have here on the forum (Funny banters/moments. Good times) just with a bigger audience and more views.
Of course everything about the events would be strictly controlled and organized so that it is consistent, fun, and organized.

What happens in SS13, stays in SS13.
It's like the nerdy internet version of Las Vegas

Social networking is an interesting proposition, but I haven't seen much of it in the SS13 community. We're never going to be large enough on facebook for people to actually notice us, so it'd be much more prudent to keep funny roleplay happenings / heartwarming moments / pictures of Chris's characters in the shower confined to a stickied "Stuff that Happened In-Game" thread. This is, of course, assuming that you want a facebook page to attract players. Bottom line is that it wouldn't work in that regard.
An event team is a fantastic idea, and I'd suggest throwing up a sign up thread on the staff boards for the core members, in addition to one on the general board to pull in ideas and bodies for event characters. All stickied, of course.
Things like podcasts and trailers are all well and good, but those should be created after we've sorted out the most important stuff, specifically the player base and bringing in coders from the our current ranks. Those two problems are, from what I've gathered from Skull's post, the most pressing. Also, we're lucky in that we can establish concrete goals to resolve the aforementioned issues instead of floaty, insubstantial suggestions.
With all that in mind, I'd like to propose the following tangible, reachable goals, just to solidify what we've been discussing. - Pulling in players through events, and giving our banner a face lift to get across our intentions of being an event-driven, roleplay-oriented server. Emphasis on the events bit. - Placing a call for coders forum-wide, visible in each subforum, so that people know that we are ready and willing to take in new developers.
