I have to agree on the concept of the Laser Katana/ Laser style weapons of phantasy star 2. A very base concept of light is that it doesnt just stop for no reason, And I'd think a weapon with a solid bit on it would LOOK better, anyway.
Say what you will, Lightsabers aren't nearly as interesting as other forms of energy swords.
Although, I do like Hardlight.

I really like the concept of a re-purposed hand-held shield generator. It has a nice balance of being a defensive device re-made for offensive purposes. Very Syndie in my opinion.

The only reason I'm kind of leery of that idea is that it has the potential to be particularly abused by mindless antag gankers. We don't want energy swords to be come so easy-to-use that other, more creative, methods of assassination fall by the way side.

Repurposed shield generator it is. For the repurposed shield genertor, would the bit that stops the shield be retractable to the point it fits in your pocket? I could totally see it wrapping around the top and bottom of the hilt, and it springs out in a badass circle. Not to mention if it actually worked as a reliable shield, I'd probably use it rather than a baton.

The shield can be generated to a specific length through the use of magnetic fields, visually, the sword would be unchanged.
